Rhode Islanders Urged To Shave Their Heads To Protest Chafee’s Tax Hike

Posted by on Sunday, 20 March, 2011

A group of upset and overtaxed Rhode Island men and women are speaking out to protest newly elected Governor Lincoln Chafee and his proposed tax increases for Rhode Island.

Under the governor’s plan, the tax rate of 7% would be reduced to just 6%, but currently non-taxed goods and services, such as non prescription medicine, dry cleaning, clothing and haircuts would be taxed at 1%.

The anti-tax group HALT (Hair Against Linc’s Taxes) has formed and is urging Rhode Islanders to take action.

The group’s spokesperson (who declined to reveal his name for this story) had this to say.

“We can’t take anymore taxes. That’s it. Plain and simple. You can’t get blood from a stone, Mr.Governor. We have families, we need gasoline and we need food. Chafee wants to tax haircuts at 1%, so we’re urging ALL Rhode Islanders to shave their heads on the front lawn of the State House on Monday, March 28, 2011 at noon. The logic is simple. If everyone shaves their heads, no one will be getting their cut. This is going to upset the state’s hairdressers, stylists and barbers, who will eventually march into Chafee’s Office and demand compensation.”

When asked if he thought this strategy was appropriate, the group leader responded, “Have you ever seen 1000 pissed off hairstylists in one place?”
